Starting something new can feel intimidating—especially when it comes to martial arts.
You might be wondering:
- Am I in shape enough?
- What if I don’t know anything?
- Is it going to be too intense?
At Kombative Concepts Martial Arts (KCMA), we’ve worked with complete beginners at all levels—and we’ve designed our classes to make your first experience welcoming, structured, and easy to follow.
Here’s exactly what you can expect when you come in for your first class.
When You First Arrive
When you walk in, you won’t be thrown into anything right away.
You’ll:
- Be welcomed by the instructor
- Get a quick overview of the class
- Have a chance to ask questions
- Be shown where everything is
Our goal is simple: Make you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in
You Don’t Need Any Experience
This is one of the biggest concerns people have—and it’s completely normal.
You do NOT need:
- Prior martial arts experience
- To be in great shape
- To know any techniques
Everything is taught step by step.
We meet you where you are and build from there.
Class Structure (What Actually Happens)
Classes are structured so you can learn without feeling overwhelmed.
Warm-Up
Light movement and drills to get your body ready.
Technical Instruction
You’ll learn:
- Basic footwork
- Simple striking or grappling movements
- Positioning and mechanics
Everything is broken down clearly so you can follow along.
Drills & Practice
You’ll work on:
- Repetition of techniques
- Controlled partner drills (if applicable)
- Building coordination and timing
No one is expected to be perfect—this is about learning.
Optional Conditioning / Finish
Some classes include:
- Light conditioning
- Core work
- Cooldown
Training Style at KCMA
At Kombative Concepts, we focus on:
- Structure and mechanics first
- Footwork and movement
- Real-world application
- Progressive learning
We don’t just run you through a workout.
We teach you how to actually develop skill.
What to Wear
Keep it simple:
- T-shirt
- Athletic shorts or pants
- Comfortable athletic shoes (for striking classes)
No special gear needed for your first class
Will I Be Training With Others?
Yes—but everything is:
- Controlled
- Structured
- Beginner-friendly
You won’t be thrown into anything you’re not ready for.
Is It Intense?
It’s as intense as you make it.
Beginners can:
- Go at their own pace
- Focus on learning
- Build up gradually
You’re not expected to keep up with advanced students
Common First-Class Concerns
“What if I’m out of shape?”
That’s exactly why people start.
“What if I feel awkward?”
Everyone does at first—it goes away quickly.
“What if I can’t keep up?”
You won’t be expected to. Everyone goes at thier own pace.
